The Mulholland Dam (named after William Mulholland, who designed the Los Angeles Aqueduct) holds the Hollywood Reservoir in place up in the Hollywood Hills. Construction began in 1923 and this photo shows it still being worked on, but I’m guessing it’s nearing completion because the north side of the dam is filling with water, so this photo is circa 1924. It is now designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is part of a wonderful trail which allows you to walk around the whole reservoir.
Here’s a 2021 satellite photo showing most of the walking trail you can take.
This photo isn’t dated but I found it on the dam’s Wikipedia page.
I have walked the trail many years ago
When I think of this dam, it reminds me of another masterpiece called the St. Francis dam he built about the same time. They look almost identical but only one could hold water!!!!!
Yes, the failure of the St Francis dam was catastrophic. The only saving grace is that it as that dam, not this one.
