In this circa photo, we’re looking north up a rather busy Flower St from around 8th St in downtown Los Angeles. In the background we can see the glorious Richfield Tower, which I would have love to have seen in person, but it came down in 1969. But I do love that catchy motto for Chevrolet: Eye it…Try it…Buy it.
A 1940 or 41 Pontiac torpedo is in the lower left corner of this photo, so I’m calling this “circa early 1940s.”
Roughly the same view in January 2021. Not quite as interesting, is it?
In the newer photo, you have to love the $7.00 all day parking. At todays rate, thats not to bad. Was in NYC last month, got hit for $50. for all day.
I noticed that sign as I was posting it and thinking “Hmmm…I must remember that place the next time I drive into downtown.”
Errata: “..came down in 1939”. Corrected: Demolition 1968-69? (Don’t these blue pencil editing geeks just drive you nutz like backseat drivers? “There’s a Richfield station. Pull over!”) And yes, Martin, you should have seen that sign blazing at night. There was no doubt who they were in town.
…and 10 ¢ at Ben’s Parking? For an hour? If my math is right, it would have bought Chris 3 1/2 minutes in NYC.
I love the math! You are so right. 3 and a half minutes! Love it.
Ben’s Auto Park Inc….owner/operator Ben Sirota. Sued by Burroughs 1943-45 for injury resulting from fall into lot facing 800 block of S. Olive related to narrow passageway between a hotel and the lot (on land leased from Pacific Electric Railway Co.). Ben’s signs indicate 10cents One Hour/15cents All Day. Also might show two hours free related to select named stores (an early validation system?).
Crazy how a parking spot in NYC (The city that always sleeps) could stir the pot! But it’s a good spot, when I hit NYC Next week I will send Mr Martin a photo in case he may want to post with this inquiry. I know it will be 3000 miles a way! But his sire is Awesome, gotta love it. Did I hear Columbo say that?
