In this photo we’re Looking west along Hollywood Blvd from Highland Ave. The photo is undated, but the hotel is in pretty good condition so I’m going to guess this was taken in the 1930s.
Mary M. says: “It started its downhill run when the Christie Hotel came in. Each room in the Christie had its own bath, but guests shared bathrooms down the hall in the Hollywood Hotel.”
What the Garden of Allah looks like in my mind.
But what a wonderful building and complete in its evocation of somewhere other than Hollywood Blvd; now or ever.
Ha, ha! This is a great game. You caught me a few back on the location of Scotty’s demise, but not this time. This is a reverse printed image taken on the Highland Avenue side. Notice the rail tracks in the road, the large size structural extension of the hotel on the west end (not the buildings across Highland), the columns that were only on the east as part of the original hotel. Look at the older posting viewing down from the Roosevelt in 1932. And the demolition shots taken at Highland help with spotting details. I just wonder who was the first guy that decided plumbing fixtures could be used to replace wood fencing around garden areas. And if he only had access to PVC back then, would he have invented patio furniture fashioned from pipe and elbow…I remember one place in Venice that ran with this for courtyard seating. It was so novel at the time.
