Late-night snacking at Audrey's Hot dog stand in Los Angeles at 3am, 1961 (William Claxton)This 1961 photograph by William Claxton is reeking with atmosphere. It was taken at Audrey’s Hotdog stand at the corner of Olympic Blvd and Alvarado St at 3am when the glamorous couple in the foreground had obviously been to some swanky soiree and needed a little nosh on the way home. Maybe they’d been dancing all night and had worked up a hunger. I’ll bet that girl had tamales, otherwise she was taking a big chance of spilling ketchup or mustard on her ballgown.

The magic of AI auto-colorization did a pretty good job of bringing this photo to life:

Some folks seem to see Audrey Hepburn and Steve McQueen in that photo.
    Maybe?

I remember this place well…..always got my favorite Hot Dog and a Root beer….I believe before this stand there was Hot Dog shaped building here in the early 50’s….when it closed, this place came in…the gas station in the background was on the Northeast corner of Olympic and Alvarado and it was a Mobil station……a block south of here, on Alvarado, in the early 50’s, I stood and watched the motorcade of President Eisenhower drive by….as a child, I was excited to see the President of the United States….

my grandmother lived around the corner on grand view. us kids would eat chili dogs from there all of the time. right up until the early ’80’s when someone had a heart attack and drove their car into the building. they were, arguably, THE best chili dog in la.
