The Cahuenga Pass has long been one of the main routes connecting Los Angeles with the San Fernando Valley. This photo is circa 1920, after it had been expanded from a dirt track to a streetcar line running alongside a two-lane roadway. And not a very packed one, which is good because it didn’t even have lanes painted on it.
The road we can see in this photo is now Cahuenga West Blvd, Cahuenga East Blvd was added in the late 1920s.
The auto-colorizer did a pretty good job bringing this photo to life.
These days, the Cahuenga Pass has the 10-lane Hollywood Freeway running through it, plus two 2-lane Cahuenga Blvds on either side of it. This satellite image is from 2022.
Was friends with co-workers, 40+ years ago, who lived at the top of the Cahuenga Pass. The place was cowboy star Ray “Crash” Corrigan’s house, built not much after the posted picture was taken. Thought even then what an idyllic location it was. Sunshine, fresh air & a sense of not being in a city & that was after the Hollywood Freeway had been built!
Totally unrelated: While looking for Corrigan’s address (couldn’t find darn it!) ran across the following pic:

Never even heard of this fire! That the on-the-water Colony burned think shows the fire devastation Malibu has always had. Looking at the pic… PCH had only been open 3 years… & all that vacant land… less than 100 years ago…
Yikes that must have been a huge blaze when it was happening!
Six chimney plus conflagration.
