I do enjoy coming across genuine color shots of yesteryear Los Angeles. Even though I’m not much of a car guy, but I do appreciate design, especially when they’re lined up like in this shot at the original Farmers Market at Fairfax Ave and Third St. That glorious pink Thunderbird is a 1958 model, so this photo is circa late 1950s.
The tower is still there but the cars parked near it are rather dull compared to their 1950s counterparts. This image is from July 2011.
My father worked at May Co. during that time. My mother and I would take a bus, meet him after work and have dinner at Farmers Market. Roast beef one time and pizza the next, both delicious. Also as I recall just across the parking was a major or minor baseball stadium that we went to on occasion. Went back to take a look several years ago and yes they were still serving roast beef and around twenty feet away they were still serving the best pizza in town.
Hey Paul, do you remember the name of the pizza place? I’d love to try the best pizza in town!
I can’t speak for Paul, but I’ll bet it’s Patsy D’Amore’s Pizza. Patsy opened the famous and popular Villa Capri restaurant in Hollywood around 1950!
I agree, M.T., what’s wrong with “color” nowadays? I often look at the cars along my street and if one of them is in another color besides what you see in the bottom photo above, it’s rare. (Is there a reason for this? …I wonder.) If you go to new movies they all seem to be shot in blues & grays or golds & browns. I was watching a lot of 60’s variety shows last year in the fall and the studio audiences were all dressed in “color.” So when this year rolled around I vowed to wear color! I got some red, blue, green etc. pants and shirts. We need more color!
How much of what’s in the top photo still exists? Not much, I’d guess.
I have fond memories of trekking up to the Farmer’s Market when I was in high school in the 60s. So many cool shops. And all the smells in the food area! Yummmmm.
As far as I know, much of that part of Farmer’s Market still exists, more or less, like it did when you were trekking up there after high school.
Cool! Glad to hear it.
