The soaring tower of Beacon Laundry, 9134 Wilshire Blvd, Beverly Hills, circa 1940You’ve got to love a city where a dry cleaning business called Beacon Laundry (of course that’s what they called it) builds a 50-foot tower to bring attention to themselves. Earthquakes be damned! We have to let passers-by that we’re here make your clothes cleaner! This landmark was at 9134 Wilshire Blvd in Beverly Hills. The photo is circa 1940, and was, in fact, taken by famous photographer Ansel Adams.

It was too much to expect Beacon Laundry’s tower to still be around, but at least the building that stands on that site now is tasteful. This image is from August 2022.

A very close friend of my family’s, Mac Tefferteller, owned a dry cleaning business in Los Angeles in the 40’s. Would anyone there know any information about him?
