Sunset Blvd with Pacific Electric Railway lines, Los Angeles, circa 1912

Sunset Blvd with Pacific Electric Railway lines, Los Angeles, circa 1912Apparently, we’re looking at a stretch of Sunset Blvd somewhere in Los Angeles, circa 1912. That cliff on the right doesn’t look familiar, so I’m not sure where the photographer was standing. Then again, this shot is from 110 years ago, so that cliff is quite likely long gone. Regardless of where it is, it’s funny to see only one Pacific Electric streetcar, one automobile, and two horse-drawn carriages traveling along what is now one of LA’s most traveled thoroughfares.

** UPDATE ** – It looks like the 1912 photo was taken here:

  1. John E Fisher says:

It looks like it may be on Sunset Boulevard (looking east) west of Benton Way. The hill on the right is still there.

  2. Walter Dominguez says:

Looks like Sunset Blvd through Echo Park between Alvarado and Silver Lake Blvd. There are such cliffs there still to this day.

  3. Grant Loucks says:

Looks like the Silver Lake area—-I think the hill is still there.

The site for tracking locations in silent films has some coverage of the area just down the road (towards LA, at the curves near Echo Park) for when the great Charlie Chaplin made early movie scenes on that stretch. Related, Water & Power site has a photo that is likely mis-identified as Sunset near the future site of UCLA…a prominent hill feature found in other photos tells us it actually looking west where Sunset is turning toward the alignment at Echo Park (what was once Resevoir Blvd.). That would be where this stretch would begin as it heads toward Sanborn Junction at the far end. One can also find a later image of the bridge at Silver Lake with a streetcar up top. The bridge hunters site has it. Nice to see how all the pieces fit together over this section of roadway.
