With most performances at the Hollywood Bowl being at night, I’ve never given much thought to how hot it might be up on the stage during the day when the orchestra needs to rehearse. Sitting in the hot LA sun for hours while playing your heart out is probably nobody’s idea of fun, so it makes sense that they would put up shade cloths to make the musicians more comfortable. I don’t have a date on this one, but the semi-circular reflecting pool is gone. It was removed in 1972, so I’m guessing mid-70s…?
** UPDATE ** – The current consensus seems to be that this photo was taken circa late 1940s.
