Los Angeles rarely sees snow these days, but for most of its existence, it has gotten snowed on roughly once every ten years or so. Friday, January 22, 1921 was one of those special days, and thankfully some quick-thinking photographer ran into the middle of La Brea Ave at around De Longpre to capture the moment. On the right we can see the line of vaguely British-looking buildings that Charlie Chaplin built as the front of his movie studio. With this snow, Chaplin probably felt quite at home.
This is roughly the same view in June 2022. The Chaplin Studios are now the headquarters of the Jim Henson Corporation.
And when I say the Jim Henson Corporation, I really mean the Muppets.
Really cool photo! Any idea what the tall / large building is in the top left hand corner of the picture? Looks like it would be the southwest corner of Sunset and La Brea… where a gas station currently stands.
La Brea was widened in late 1929. Chaplin buildings south of the gate were moved 10 feet east. North of the gate had facades shaved to allow for the new sidewalk. (Project was noted as an area of 15 feet by 600 feet per the Hollywood Filmograph article 6/15/1929.)
