One of the most popular ice cream parlors in Los Angeles from the 1930s through the late 1960s was Currie’s with locations all over Southern California. This location was at 1521 W. Whittier Blvd, Montebello in 1946. As we can see from that very tall sign on the roof that their signature dish was their Mile High Cone. I’m guessing it was served in a waffle cone and piled high with ice cream? At 10 cents, it sounds like a good deal to me.

That’s great. Fun to see women in hats, gloves, and men in suits to go out for ice cream!
Going to Currie’s in San Pedro was a highlight when visiting Ft MacArthur in the 40s.
Yes, it was in a waffle cone. The scoopers were shaped to deliver a scoop the shape of the one in the photo. The ice cream tasted rich and came in a variety of flavors–including, if memory serves, for one short time, avocado and pumpkin. But at 10¢, it qualified in the early 50s as a splurge when most others were a nickel.
The Currie’s I knew was at Culver Center in Culver City. It had a great big concrete “mile high” ice cream cone (like this one — https://imgur.com/fyG66GI). The Culver Center wasn’t built until 1949, so it was probably a few years later than this Montebello one.
I don’t remember the cones being that big. They just shaped the ice cream in a more streamlined “dome” than the usual round scoop.
I remember Currie’s from the 1950’s but not the 1960’s. They had song advertisements on the radio. One of them went something like this:
MIle high Currie’s stores, mile high ice cream cones
Mile high malts, rich and good
Hurry to Currie’s in your neighborhood
Currie’s Icecream was definitely a highlight for me on some evenings with my mom, sister and myself, our stepfather would take us there for dessert after spending sometime at a real nice little park with a little waterfall, the little park was located in Monterey Park on Atlantic boulevard… I believe it was in the early 1950s
I know that little park! I worked in the San Gabriel Valley for nearly 40 years, and one of our favorite Chinese restaurants was across the street from the waterfall. I was so sad when that restaurant closed. They had the BEST General Tso’s Chicken.
