I love that this photographer thought to take a night photo of the glowing neon surrounding the Bundy Theatre in Santa Monica, silhouetting that car parked out front. But what I love even more is that several of the letters were out, which gives it a gritty film noir feel. The Bundy was playing Lawrence Olivier’s “Henry V” which puts this photo at 1946. Opening on December 31, 1941, the theater stood at 3414 Pico Blvd which was an unfortunate location because it stood in the way of the Santa Monica Freeway and forced to close in January 1963.

Looks like they are advertising a television (?) on the billboard to the right. Or is it a radio/phono system? Either way, the message to “Just Stay Home” is not going to play out well for the theaters industry.
Especially one running a Shakespeare movie!
I was wondering if the neon sign might be one of those that has random letters blinking on and off to attract attention. I tried finding other night photos of the theatre to find out, perhaps, but to no avail.
Interesting photo of Bundy Theatre, Martin. The car in front is 1949-50 vintage, probably a Chevrolet, so the movie would’ve been a revival.
This was located a few blocks from where I’ve lived for the past 40 years. What a beautiful sign above the marquee. It reminds me of the Loyola Theater in Inglewood.
