In this photo, we’re looking east along a surprisingly quiet Hollywood Blvd from McCadden Place. Past the Citizen’s National Trust & Savings Bank building, we can see the Pig’N Whistle Café, Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre with its towering curved sign. What I really like is seeing the ticket office for the Union Pacific Railroad, whose network blanketed the western half of the US. The movie playing at the Egyptian was MGM’s “The Great Caruso” which came out in May 1951.
This is roughly the same view in February 2021.
I see the Royal Room, too! 🙂
And The Orient.
Ohmygosh! The Royal Room is right there and I missed it (too busy looking at the Union Pacific signage.)
Dark City! My brain goes in circles. Did you just fix this while I was away in another room re-arranging furnishings…yeah, more circles. This location would be somewhat east of Highland at another intersection by the hotel. So not “from Highland”. BTW, just noting the Royal Room would later become called the Royal Scot with some signage changes over there out of view (info from NLA). And if Hollywood Boulevard isn’t enough to drive you crazy, try figuring out all the changes in the valley!😂😂 As for railroad ticket offices, it was Southern Pacific that was around the Highland block originally. And Santa Fe was in the north side by Cahuenga before the shift to Vine..they really worked the Hollywood stars trade. But UPRR certainly knew how to make the entrance look good, like the dome that covered the platform area on the back of open air observation cars before the closed solariums came into useage. Darn it it wasn’t all circular too!
You’re right. I assume it was looking east from Highland but of course it’s McCadden Place, so I’ve gone back and fixed it all.
Don’t sweat it, this is Friday when even copious quants of caffeine can’t cure cerebral clutter. Hey, is there curb service at the pig or just another banker pulling up to check his lotto winnings at Citizen’s National? That’s one phat automobile.
