In this genteel, almost pastoral photo, we’re looking northeast along Aldebaran Canal in Venice, California. Developer Abbot Kinney opened Venice in 1905; this image was taken six years later, in 1911. We can see that quite a few homes had been built during the interim, giving the area more of a community feel. The difference here, of course, is that the main mode of transport around the area was but little boats that could fit under those pedestrian bridges. In time, the canals of Venice would be filled in; these days Aldebaran Canal is now known as Market Street.
This is roughly the same view up Market St as it looked in February 2021.
That’s Market Street?
Oops! I uploaded the wrong photo. But I’ve fixed it now.
That house in the distance with the domed tower and arches is still there.
It’s known as “The Venice if America House.”

Oh wow, JCF! Well spotted!
Once again, LA decides to wipe away any sign of the charm it once had to pave roads and build houses. Wonderful just Wonderful!!!!
Wait, so they filled in that canal? How tragic!
That’s not the only one that was filled in. Tragic indeed.
I like it better with the canal! So peaceful looking! Such a shame they filled it in.
The canals all began to be filled in…in 1929.
