In 1958, three years after Capitol Records opened their iconic building, they started an annual tradition of decorating the top of their building with lights that resemble a Christmas tree. In this shot we’re looking south down Vine St circa 1970 (if that 1968 Chevrolet Bel Air on the right is anything to go by.)
Gail R posted this shot of the Capitol Records taken December 2023:
And in other news…I’d like to wish everyone who follows my vintage musings here a merry and bright Christmas and cheery 2024. I’m very happy to see your interactions and appreciate your interest so very much!
This is how that same view looked in August 2022:
Thank you, Martin! We appreciate all the work you do. You give us a gift every day of the year. I have often wondered how you manage it on a daily basis. Wishing you a warm and wonderful Christmas.
Thank you, Mary. I’m glad you enjoy my posts.
I join Mary in her comments. I get a lot of emails, but your daily photos I always look forward to. They bring back memories, and in some cases reveal new things about LA I didn’t know. Your search for, research of, and posting these photos takes a large part of your time, and it is appreciated by all of us out here in cyberspace. You can take a few days off now and then and we won’t go away. Hope your holidays are fulfilling.
Thank you, Alan. I send these posts out into the internet, never really know where or how they’re going to land. It’s very heartening to know that you look forward to getting them!
You are the best Martin, Warmest wishes to you during the holiday season. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks so much, John!
I want to express a hearty second to all the above comments and wish you a Merry Christmas and successful New Year.
Thanks, Gordon, and the same to you.
I’m also chiming in with my thanks and a warm Christmas Greeting to you, Martin!
Thanks, The Other Martin!
Thank you, Martin, for your daily pics. I enjoy grabbing a cup of coffee in the morning and seeing the pic of the day. I love old La area history and pictures.
Merry Christmas, I hope you have a nice one!
I’m glad to be a part of your morning ritual!
Merry Christmas, Martin!
Thanks for all the memories!
Thanks, Paula! And thanks for your comments and additions and memories!
Merry Christmas, Martin! Thank you so much for sharing the photos and your knowledge of Hollywood. It is so very much appreciated! I look forward to checking every day and reading your blog. Take care!
And merry Christmas to you, too, Patti. Thanks for making me a part of your day!
A very Merry Christmas to all, but up here at Santa’s North Bi-Polar Village we have to keep the elves on heavy psychiatric medications lest they notice the glitches in the machine. To wit, the lighted “W” on The BROADWAY has gone out…a possible ominous sign of things to come in the next decade. (We also don’t allow Rudolph to play with the other reindeer, let alone any sharp objects or keyboards!) “I survived the line at Higbee’s and all I got was this lousy Red Ryder T-shirt.”
Thank you, Martin, for all you do here. It’s a bright spot in every day for me.
And, on a less lofty level, I bet that Vine Motel had some juicy stories to tell!
You’re very welcome, Bill. And yes, I bet the Vine Motel saw more than it’s fair share of shenanigans.
I can see Palermo’s in that first photo. Reeeaaaly miss that place
