Back in the good old days when we knew how to build eye-catching storefronts comes this circa 1936 gem. This Art Deco jewel stood at 611 West 7th St in downtown Los Angeles, and was home to Silverwoods department store and Stetson Hats for Women. I find it amazing that the builders went to the trouble of including that bas relief across the top when, three stories high, the chances of anyone seeing it was fairly low.
This is what comes up when I plug in that address. Feel free to roll your eyes and sigh deeply like I did. This image is from January 2023.
I gasped!!!
I want to assume it’s the same building horrifically “renovated”. If so, I wonder if that gorgeous detail would be underneath that layer of cement facade?
It would be nice to think that they just stuccoed over the front and all that original stuff is still there, but I doubt it.
Wow! That is a shocker! I’m trying to imagine a reason why anyone, even a Philistine, would think this was necessary.
They are IDIOTS that is why!!!
They took a beautiful building and just ruined it!
