There’s nothing like a vintage color photo of a parking lot filled with vintage cars to make you nostalgic—even if you were never there back then. This is LA’s original Farmers Market at 6333 W. 3rd St on the northeast corner of Fairfax Ave. It opened in 1934; this was taken in 1950, when its parking lot was filled with gleaming 1940s cars. I especially like that bronze one in the lower right corner. And by the way, there’s a word that means “nostalgia for a time you’ve never known” – it’s “anemoia.”
Farmer’s Market is still very much around. This image is from August 2022.
Ah, Martin, I suffer from “anemoia”. Especially for the 1940’s. Those cars are sharp and what a nice Farmer’s Market! Thanks so much for sharing this photo!
Patti I also suffer from anemoia but for the late 20s and early 30s. I know I must have been living in that era. I love everything about it except the depression.
When I was a kid, I watched a lot of old movies on TV. I once told my mother when I was about 9 that if I could back in history, I’d want to go to the 1930s. Because everybody lived in gorgeous mansions, wore beautiful clothes, and went to parties all the time.
Fred and Ginger didn’t teach me very accurate history!
This would be left of the other color view (third linked post above, right end) labled “circa late 1950’s”. The buildings are easily spotted. BTW, there’s a place across the road here (left) that seems to be selling “Pottery”…so the Farmer’s Market might be having a nice spillover effect for other retailers in the area.
Current photo pales in comparison to what it use to look like. Like most of your other photos of now and then pictures. So sad.
John, I look at that top photo and it reminds me of one of those horrid extremely HOT uncomfortable sun baked days, the air full of smog that burned your eyes and infested your lungs. The second photo has clear blue air and gently swaying palm trees and doesn’t give an impression of oppressive heat.
Love this blog! I learn so much!
I used to go to the Farmers Market occasionally when I was in high school and college. I get an immediate smell-memory when I see these old pictures.
