And from the “They Sure Don’t Make ‘Em Like That Any More” file comes the Fox Stadium Theatre at 8906 W. Pico Blvd, Los Angeles. It opened on March 5, 1931. This photo was taken later that same year, so everything we can see here is brand spanking new. As if the detailing on the main part of the building wasn’t enough, that tower is a masterpiece of Art Deco gorgeousness. And it had beacon at the top to warn low-flying aircraft.
This is roughly how that building looked in December 2020. The theater closed in 1961. It’s been the B’nai David-Judea synagogue since 1964.
I’ve driven past that a million times and never knew it was a theater. Any idea why it was called the Fox “Stadium” Theater?
The Los Angeles Theatres blog says: “The rear of the auditorium was with stadium-style seating, a rarity in Los Angeles at the time.”
Thanks!
Several movie theatres are now churches. Even the Vogue on Hollywood Blvd.!
