I do like the way the photographer framed this shot of the Belmont Theatre at 126 S. Vermont Ave. Los Angeles, taking in the lit marquee facing the street as well as the huge sign on top of the theater featuring the current movie, “Two Sisters from Boston” starring Kathryn Grayson, June Allyson, and Jimmy Durante. The movie opened on June 5, 1946 and ran for a few weeks. With that searchlight next to the marquee, I’m wondering if the photo was taken the night the movie opened.
The Belmont closed in 1973. This is roughly how that view looked in May 2024.
The lettering in the large sign appears to be in neon. They didn’t change that for each new movie, did they? That seems like a lot of work and expense.
That’s what I thought, too. Maybe they did that for premieres?
Why is it your city seems to be flooded with these crappy looking mini malls????? Shoe boxes!!!!.
So Sad. I agree with the last comment. Mini Malls, and some that are
not attractive! — have taken over LA. Who were the architechts of these places? No imagination at all. We live in a city of artists, at least put up
a building or mini mall that is nice looking. Thank you for all the vintage photos. Love them.
Always sad to see these single screen theaters disappear. They were so beautiful inside. Even the neighborhood theaters were beautiful. Glad we still have the old theaters along Broadway Downtown. It is rare to be able to go inside them except for special events but you can get into the Tower Theater which is now an Apple computer store. Apple did a great job in the Tower restoration. They are proud of the building and take good care of it. It is beautiful. They do not mind you going in just to look at the theater. You may also get into the State Theater across the street. It is now a church. Just don’t go in during a service.
I await a blog that documents the elimination of “strip malls”, showing the
before and after photos!
