A couple of days ago I posted a photo looking north along Main St in downtown Los Angeles in 1906. Yesterday, someone sent me this photo taken from much the same angle (we can see the gazebo atop the Main Street Savings Bank Building on the right). This image was captured 5 years earlier on May 8th, 1901, a day when Main St was teeming with Angelenos because President William McKinley had visited the city. Look at all those people and horses and bicycles. You can practically hear the bedlam. (Incidentally, McKinley was assassinated four months later, on September 6, 1901.) This is roughly how that view looked in May 2024.
