I don’t normally post images from as late as 1972, but I’m a sucker for color photos, especially if they’re of one of LA’s most iconic buildings: the Bullocks Wilshire department store. We’re looking west along Wilshire Blvd from Commonwealth Ave. The building on the right was originally called The Town House. It opened in 1929, became a Sheraton in 1954, and closed in 1993. Can anyone tell me what the white car at the corner is? It looks very 70s!
This is roughly how that view looked in July 2022.
The car is an AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon, probably a 1970 model, with a shaply raked rear window and a chrome rear trim package.
Thanks, David.
The white car is an AMC Hornet Sportabout wagon.. The smaller bumpers tell me it’s a 1970-72 era.
Thanks PDQ
Regarding the white station wagon at the corner, my guess would be an AMC Hornet SST ‘ Sportabout ‘. The profile leads me to believe it is the higher-end version of the Hornet line but I cannot see any identifiable badging. I’ll watch this space to see if that identity is contested as I’m not absolutely sure.
Too bad they removed those beautiful palm trees that were there in the 70s photo. They also need to trim down those bushes next to the building as they are a little to tall.
The car was the first thing I noticed. My dad bought a 1974 green Hornet Sportabout wagon with a white stripe on the side, I learned to drive in that car, Fun little car, I owned it in the 80s until 84. Then sold it to a young Australian guy who had just came into the country.
Thanks, Mark
