In this circa 1950s shot, we’re looking at the parking lot of the Farmer’s Market busy with the cars of shoppers. In fact, I’m wondering if perhaps it’s a Saturday morning because it looks to me like that Woody station wagon might have trouble finding an open slot. Way in the background, we can see the lights of Gilmore Field, which was a 13,000-seat minor-league baseball stadium that came down in 1957. This photo has some elevation to it, which makes me wonder what the photographer was standing on. The roof of a bus, maybe? (Source: jalopyjournal.com)
This is roughly how that view looked in May 2024.
What I would give to own that Ford Woody. As far as the current photo all I can say is YUK!!!!
You can have it; the ’49-51 Ford wagons had a taller roof than the other body styles with the side windows raised to match, but the windshield wasn’t which left the car with a fivehead.
Hi Martin! If you examine the aerial photos on HistoricAerials.com (it’s free) a multi-story, triangular-shaped building is apparent directly across Fairfax Ave. from Farmer’s Market. This was obviously the location from where the photographer took the picture. By 1952 that building was no longer there.
Ah, thanks Steve. That makes sense. I think I kind of assumed there wasn’t anything there but now that I think about it, by the 1950s there must have been something. And if that building you found was gone by 1952, it probably dates this photo to the early 1950s (or maybe the late 1940s.)
Is Dupar’s still around? I thought I heard they closed their restaurants.
Yes, they’ve closed most of them, but the last time I was at the market, DuPar’s was still there!
Continuity! Yes, it’s nice to know there’s one still around.
