Stage 6 on the 20th Century-Fox studio lot, Century City, Los Angeles, circa early 1930sIn this photo, we get to visit the Fox movie studio in Century City. From the early 30s Nash and Chrysler, we can pin point this photo as being circa 1930s, which places it before the 1935 merger with 20th Century Pictures. I love how Stage 6 and its neighbor in the background are topped with (what I’m guessing we can call) a ziggurat tower. In fact, each soundstage appears to have a pair of towers, which is a nice decorative touch for an otherwise utilitarian structure. In the years to come, Stage 6 would be used in the filming of “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947), “The King and I,” (1956) “The Poseidon Adventure,” (1972) and Nine to Five (1980). I sure do wish today’s automobiles had as much class and styling as those 30s had. I guess I was just born to late.

Thanks, Martin. What memories! Two stars kept Fox in business during the 30s. Warner Oland (as CHARLIE CHAN), the greatest movie detective, and adorable Shirley Temple. Their films made a fortune for the studio, let alone kept so many good folks employed. The big shots at Fox were always worrying about Shirley growing up, but she aged gracefully on the screen, still with that lovable kid look for years. Michael Whalen, who played her dad in a couple of films, said he never work with such a pro. Same said by director John Ford. On the other side, Oland was always gassed behind the scenes, however clever, he did his best work with a couple of belts! We big kids miss them. Welcome to Hollywood.

You’re psychic vibrations are on overdrive, Sir! You sent us this lovely photo of Studio 6 in its initial glory on the same day that Disney, current owners of 21st Century Fox entertainment assets, announced that it’s vacating the 21st Century Fox Lot by the end of 2025, 2 years less of the tenancy agreed to when Disney acquired them!

Hollywood Heritage offered a tour of the Fox backlot a year ago, which I and some friends attended. The lot itself doesn’t sponsor any tours for the general public. It’s a very beautiful studio lot; you don’t usually see soundstages designed as nice as these are on the outside. I wish their famous backlot was still there, too!
