What a magnificent view of Los Angeles City Hall lit up at night. Standing at 200 N. Spring St in downtown, the building’s dedication ceremony took place on April 26, 1928. The caption for this photo pegged the date as 1928, so for Angelenos, the sight of City Hall lit up at night would still have been new, especially as it was the tallest building in the city. In the background we can see the word TIMES lit up on the LA Times building on the northeast corner of Broadway and 1st. In the foreground a neon sign reads: “Evening Herald” which referred to the Los Angeles Herald newspaper that ran from 1909 to 1931 until it merged with the Los Angeles Express to become the Los Angeles Herald-Express. Just beautiful. Thanks, Martin. In just a few years Mayor Shaw would take control of the city, and the big corruption blowout that resulted. To this day they still talk about Frank Shaw. Huell Howser, much to my surprise, did a super story some years back on PBS, actually showing the tunnels beneath city hall (now boarded and/or filled in) where Shaw had booze shipped and other illegal opportunities. An amazing situation, like something from a gangster flick. Warner Brothers made a movie about his connection to a bombing and he sued them. It was setteld out of court. Obviously he had good lawyers, and won other suits over libel accusations. If that building could talk. And it’s a showplace. The Daily Planet building on tv’s SUPERMAN.
