Charlie Butterworth was a well known comedy actor in the 1930s and 40s. His most memorable film role was in the Irving Berlin musical “This is the Army” (1943) as the bugle-playing Private Eddie Dibble. He generally was a supporting actor, most notably to Mae West in “Every Day’s a Holiday”, to Laurel and Hardy and Jimmy Durante in “Hollywood Party”, and to Clark Gable, Robert Montgomery, and Joan Crawford in “Forsaking All Others.” His main partner in crime was fellow Garden of Allah resident Robert Benchley. The two of them were infamous for serving up dry martinis in a glass teapot and would ask Dorothy Parker, Benchley’s other boon companion, to “come around for tea.”
