Book 1 in the Hollywood’s Greatest Year trilogy

Polly Maddox lives under the sheltering wing of Santa Catalina Island, her world as small and idyllic as the isolated cove where her father ran a not-so-secret moonshine operation during Prohibition. But when he’s accused of a startling crime and goes on the lam, Polly’s life capsizes, leaving her with little choice but to flee toward the gleaming mirage of 1939 Los Angeles.
Armed only with lightning-fast fingers and a sharp wit, Polly talks her way into the executive suite of demanding, brilliant movie producer David O. Selznick as he labors over his most ambitious project: a film the rest of Hollywood scornfully dismisses as “Selznick’s Folly.”
As Polly gets swept into the chaos of filming Gone with the Wind, she realizes Selznick may have information about where she might find her father—but does he have murky motives of his own? Undaunted, Polly forges ahead, but the battle to clear her father’s name thrusts her directly into the path of a ruthless insider—and he plays for keeps. Polly must outmaneuver his insidious ploys in a town where favors and fraud reign hand-in-hand.
From the author of the Garden of Allah novels comes book one in the Hollywood’s Greatest Year trilogy. This delightfully nostalgic yet gripping tale promises to transport you to a time when movies were larger than life and Hollywood was reaching its golden zenith.

REVIEWS

This is the first book written by Martin Turnbull I have read but it certainly won’t be the last! This is also the first book review I’ve ever done because I enjoyed it so much. Selznick’s Girl Friday took me to a bygone era of glitz, glamour, and gangsters wrapped in a surprisingly twisty tale. The characters were beautifully developed to the point that I felt as if I actually knew them. I cheered on the brave exploits of the main protagonist,Polly, even as at the same time I said “ Don’t do it Polly”! I was sad when the book ended!

Selznick’s Girl Friday is a fascinating read: witty, sharply clever, perceptive, deeply researched and fun. A huge treat for Gone with the Wind fans, with some delightful excursions into the Land of Oz. Don’t miss this one. Can’t wait for the next in the trilogy!

Selznick’s Girl Friday is a delightful romp through the beginning of what eventually turned out to be one of the greatest years in film history. I have enjoyed all of Martin Turnbull’s work, and the beginning of this new trilogy will definitely be on my list as another favorite. As always, he deftly weaves fictional characters with situations in which they meet historical figures in interesting and sometimes crazy ways. But then Hollywood always has been more than a little nuts, and the novel is entertaining from beginning to end, especially if you love Hollywood of the late 1930s.

How does he do it? The master storyteller has done it again with this start of a new trilogy. A captivating page turner of a yarn that is as extraordinary as each of his last 14 books. Highly enjoyable and always eager for the next book.
