Simon’s Drive-In at night, Wilshire and Fairfax, 1942

Simon’s Drive-In stood at the corner of Wilshire Blvd and Fairfax Ave the May Co. department store, on the site where Johnnie’s diner now stands. This shot from 1942 shows us how eye-catching the place must have been at night.

Oil derrick decorated for the holiday season, Santa Fe Springs, 1929

It’s nice to know that even the oilmen decorate for Christmas. This shot is from 1929 and shows an oil derrick emblazoned with Christmas cheer. This was in Santa Fe Springs (southeast of downtown L.A.) and I’m guessing was probably … Continue reading

Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, 1929

I wish I knew more about this photo than I do. This is Beverly Drive, in Beverly Hills, in 1929 on a night when I’m guessing something big was going on—at least big enough to warrant four searchlights.

Night view looking down Vine Street from Hollywood Blvd

Of all the photos I’ve seen looking up and down Vine Street, I’ve never noticed that you could spot the sign on the Ravenswood Apartment building (where Mae West lived) all the way from Hollywood Boulevard. I just wish the … Continue reading
