Zulu Hut, Ventura Blvd, near Universal Studios, late 1920s

This is an exciting find, for me at least. In my novel, “The Garden on Sunset”, there is a scene set at a place called the Zulu Hut which stood at 11100 Ventura Blvd in what is now known as Studio City. It was near Universal Studios in what was then a fairly rural area. When I came across the Zulu Hut in my research, I read—wide-eyed—that black-faced waiters (!) served cornpones (cornmeal bread usually shaped into a flat cake and baked or fried on a griddle), squab and fried chicken in thatched huts, I knew I had a set a scene there. But try as I might, googling my fingers to nubs, I could *not* find a photo of it . . . until now. And it’s every bit as kitsch as I pictured.

Looked on Google maps, and The Fox and Hounds pub now seems to stand on that very same site.
