Popular nightclub Slapsy Maxie’s at 5665 Wilshire Boulevard, Los AngelesSlapsy Maxie’s was a popular nightclub, which stood at 5665 Wilshire Boulevard (east of Fairfax, it had previously been the Wilshire Bowl) and run by prizefighter Max Rosenbloom although the moneyman behind it was really top L.A. gangster, Mickey Cohen. At the time this photo was taken, Spike Jones was playing. He was a bandleader who specialized in performing satirical arrangements of popular songs, and probably best known for “Yes! We Have No Bananas.” (The building is still there but it’s now an Office Depot which is rather depressing if you ask me.)

It’s hard to find info on Slapsy Maxie’s. But you have it here. Thanks. I’m working on a novel about Charlie Chaplin, needed to see what the place looked like. Great reference. Thanks.
