After Alla Nazimova opened the Garden of Allah Hotel, then went bankrupt over it and was forced to sell her share, the hotel went through a couple of management changes, and had a bit of a relaunch. This ad is from July 10th, 1930. It reads:
“Truly the one place in all Southern California where you’ll enjoy life the most. Gorgeous, breath-taking beauty in the garden . . . superb appointments in the apartments and villas . . . such cuisine as nowhere else in California. Swimming pool . . . tennis courts . . . close to Hollywood and its famous theaters . . . midway between downtown and the beaches . . . in short, a perfect gem of gracious living, in a perfect setting of purple mountains and azure air. Individual villas $250 per month, up.”
Sounds like a great place to live, if you ask me!
Using an online inflation calculator, renting a bungalow would be the equivalent of $3,400.00 today. Is that about correct? I was so thinking I could take my current salary and live there quite comfortably, but alas, no!
