Frank’s Francois Café (1919 to 1923, before it became Musso and Frank Grill at 6667 Hollywood BoulevardI always thought that the oldest restaurant in Hollywood is the Musso and Frank Grill, which opened at 6667 Hollywood Boulevard in 1919. Turns out, that’s kinda sorta true. The full story is that *a* restaurant opened in 1919. It was at 6669 Hollywood Boulevard, but it was called “Frank’s Francois Café.” The Musso and Frank Grill opened its doors on July 28,1923 when Joseph Musso partnered with Frank Toulet. In 1927, Frank sold his interest in the place to Musso and (and someone called Joseph Carissimi), and in the 1930s, moved the front door down to 6667. This photo shows what the original restaurant looked like: Frank’s Francois Café. We can only imagine what Hollywood Boulevard looked when it opened. I can only guess that it was still a largely residential street which far fewer stores and cafes than would eventually populate the thoroughfare as little as 10 years later.
