“The Hitching Post” was a small theater on Hollywood Boulevard opposite the Pantages that showed nothing but westerns by Tom Mix, Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers. During WWII, it became a newsreel theatre, called the Tele-View. It was one of the first theaters to close after the war because no one needed newsreels when television brought news into homes. This photo was taken in 1941.
I was one of those kids lucky kids who got to see Cowboy and Indian movies at the Hitching Post on Saturday afternoons. Our mothers would drop us off there so they could shop at the Broadway Hollywood Department store. I remember we had to check our cap guns in at the door before they let us in the theater. When the movie was over, we got our cap guns back.
Just in casual conversation, I happened to mention the Hitching Post, now and then. Not one person even heard of the Hitching Post theater, or believed what I said about the cap guns. Incidentally, my fathers friends included Tom Mix and Wild Bill Elliot (William Nance). And a guy named Leonard Sly, (Roy Rogers) was the president of the Studio City Pigeon Racing Club
I think that’s interesting that kids would even bring cap guns to a movie. I dont recall ever doing that, but then maybe it was a custom out there in Hollywood. I do know that the Hitching Post theater occasionally had western stars make personal appearances. I once had a tape of Straight Arrow making a personal appearance at the Hitching Post along with Johnny Mack Brown to premier his new radio show.

Wow, Don, you had to check your cap guns at the door? I’m surprised they were so cap-gun-safety aware!
