From 1955 to 1969 the northwest corner of Hollywood and Vine was occupied by Hody’s coffee shop, name after (I assume) owner Sidney Hoedemaker. (For the previous 15 years it had been a Melody Lane, and before that, a Coco Tree café.) Hody’s was a chain of 8 family restaurants and we usually see photos of this place with a huge clown face, but I prefer this billboard for a 1957 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket automobile, which places this photo in the mid-to-late-1950s. This corner is now an empty parking lot, but I think it would make a perfect location for a new Brown Derby.
The same corner at night in 1959:
The history of the northwest corner of the Hollywood and Vine intersection:
I was a busboy and worked the soda fountain the summer of 1966.
Experienced some interesting characters coming into the restaurant!
Worked till closing and had to walk home to my apartment where which was located right behind the Grumman’s theater.
It was a little scary walking home at that hour and especially in the late 60s.

The mid-to-late 60s??? Oh yes, Mark, I’m sure you saw a lot of interesting life!
