From the look of the artwork on its menu, it seems like The Hut was around in the 1950s. The back of its menu shows they were around for at least 17 years. Interestingly, it sat on the same site – 11100 Ventura Blvd, Studio City – as a place known as the Zulu Hut, which stood there in the early 1930s.
You’re talking about my dad Joe Shikany. He had The Hut in Evanston, Illinois, on Northwestern’s Campus. I don’t know who owned this “Hut” but the menu is very similar to my dad’s in Evanston so it had to be someone familiar. I still have my dad’s menu and believe me, they swiped his design. Very odd. My dad opened Shikany’s at Ventura Blvd and Fruitland after he moved to L.A.
My Father’s Uncle, Joe Shikany, founded, owned and operated The Hut in the late 40s early 50s. Later he renamed the restaurant Shikanys
Thanks for stopping by Bob. I didn’t know about that latter name change.
