I’d heard that when Grauman’s Chinese Theatre first opened, that the ushers dressed in traditional Chinese garb. I assumed that it meant Hollywood’s version of “traditional Chinese garb” until I came across this shot. I don’t know how comfortable it would have been to work in these costumes, but it would have added a layer of authenticity, I’d imagine. This photo was dated 1927, which is the year that Grauman’s opened, so maybe the people shown here are also the very first group of Grauman’s ushers.
