The Magic Castle is a prominent private magicians club located on a hillside on Franklin Ave overlooking the Hollywood and Highland complex. The place is a perfect venue for a magic club but I’ve never seen what it looked like originally. I don’t know when this photo was taken of the Rollin P. Lane house, but it was build in 1909 for Rollin B. Lane, who was a banker, real estate developer and philanthropist. From the look of this photo, I’d say it was taken not too long after the mansion was built.
Great website. I don’t know how I managed to miss it until now.
A couple corrections:
The name Rollin P. Lane is erroneous, showing up now and then as a result of OCR text readers misinterpreting badly printed old newspapers. The one and only name for the gentleman who owned the house was Rollin B. (Benjamin) Lane.
The early photo was probably taken in the early 1930’s since the two palm trees are gone from the front yard and some pretty big trees have grown on the hillside that was nearly baren when the residence was being constructed in the second half of 1909.
