George Cukor’s swimming pool on Cordell Drive in Beverly Hills

George Cukor's home on Cordell DriveA number of Hollywood biographies and memoirs mention George Cukor’s home as being one of the great social centers of Hollywood social life—especially the almost-legendary poolside Sunday brunches he would put on. But this is the first time I’ve actually seen a shot of Cukor’s pool. It’s actually not quite as roomy as I pictured, but is lovely nonetheless. I’m guessing that pool house on the far side was the one he’d often make available to visiting VIPs, like Somerset Maugham.

Below is the set built at 20th Century Fox for the ill-fated film Marilyn Monroe film, Something’s Got To Give (1962) directed by Cukor:
