Los Angeles Theatre, Bullocks Department Store, Kress Five Dime, on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, 1931Here’s a wonderful snapshot of life in Los Angeles in 1931, featuring three things that Angelenos at the time would all have known, but whose names are largely forgotten nowadays: the magnificently palatial Los Angeles Theatre (opened in 1931 with Chaplin’s “City Lights” which is playing in this photo); Bullocks Department Store, which had a number of branches around LA, the best of which was on Wilshire; and Kress, a five-and-dime store whose best-known branch was on Hollywood Boulevard.
