Postcard Dorothy Parker sent from the Garden of Allah Hotel, Los Angeles December 20th, 1945

This is a pretty amazing find. It’s a postcard Dorothy Parker sent from the Garden of Allah Hotel on December 20th, 1945. Look how she signs the return address: “Mrs. Alan Campbell.” I found that remarkably conventional for someone like Parker, even if it is 1945. And her last line: “And please don’t forget about me.” This, from one of the most well-remembered American writers of the 20th century.

Fox House was the home Dorothy and Alan own back in Pennsylvania. Hiram Beer was their live-in gardener and handyman who also looked after their car and fed their animals.

The artwork in the letterhead would have been the same shown in this vintage postcard:

  1. Al Donnelly says:

Funny, the stamp seems to have the pre-war experimental DC-4E transport which ended up in Japanese Imperial hands after crashing in Tokyo Harbor. And there’s that two-digit 46 postal code to help with dating items.
