Here is the view was from under the Hollywood sign not long after the sign went up. This photo is circa 1925 (the sign was erected in 1923) and this vista is a largely deserted Beachwood Canyon looking slightly west toward the Hollywood Reservoir and dam, which was also new (built 1924.) I assume those parallel lines in the distance are the rapidly growing town of Hollywood.
