If you’re going to open an ice cream store, why wouldn’t you build it in the form of an igloo? Makes perfect sense to me. The Igloo ice cream store stood at 4302 West Pico Boulevard, not too far from the Miracle Mile section of Wilshire Blvd. This photo was taken in 1928 and I don’t know how long it lasted, but it’s a darned sight more cheery than the dreary mini mall that’s there now.
How long did it last? It must have melted away pretty quickly in the warm Southern California sun leaving us to wonder, and in wonder of its magnificence. I also wonder what “Old Fashion Ice Cream and Sherbets” were 92 years ago and how much further back they went then.
I could find little evidence of it elsewhere, so I guessing it didn’t last long. But yes, you have to wonder what constituted “old fashioned” 92 years ago!
I’m pretty sure that advanced air conditioning wasn’t available to small businesses at that time, but just imagine if you could walk into that store and see your breath fogging. I would have been a regular customer!
Hello I enjoy your photographs I was wondering if you have any historic photographs of pico Boulevard and W. Blvd. also do you have any photos of Piko near Rimpau in the 1980s And lastly how about any photographs of the area that was recently used by capital Burger which was coincidentally right across the street from igloo icecream on pico Boulevard near Crenshaw
Hi Michael – you can find all the photos I have of Pico Blvd by typing “Pico” into the search bar at the top right corner of this website. Or you could follow this link: https://martinturnbull.com/?s=pico
I don’t recall coming across Capital Burger.
Thanks! Capitol burger was located across the street from your pictures on top. I believe it was open in 1960 I am so curious to see what the area looked like back in the 30’s boy! If only I could travel back in time ?

If you ever figure out a way to do that, call me first. I’ll gladly hitch a ride back to the 1930s!
