I don’t know how good Lloyd King was at selling Fords, or how long he sold them for, but I do like his showroom at 5912 Pacific Blvd in Huntington Park. With those backlit signs and the display above the front door, I’m sure all the locals knew where King plugged his cars, including the Lincoln Zephyr V12 if the sign in the window is anything to go by. This image is from 1937.
Leonard W. says: “King’s first advert from the Los Angeles Evening Post Record, July 16, 1921. He advertised regularly in the papers up until 1945 and then no more.”
Sadly, King’s Ford showroom is now the site of a large mini mall. This image is from June 2022.
Thanks for sharing this night-shot of a sadly long gone era. It not too dissimilar to Tiny Naylor’s restaurant which closed and demolished for a shopping area.
Lloyd king was my grandfather. His business was very successful until 1960 due to investment in ford trucks. My father became the general manager for a few years before selling the land and ending the dealership. During the depression my grandfather sold almost anything he could so he didn’t have to let any of his employees go. He was an active member in Rotary in Huntington Park. Love the pictures that you have.
Thanks for stopping by, Peggy, and sharing some info with us about your grandpa!
Peggy, my grandfather was a long time employee at Lloyd King’s Ford … I believe he may have been the head service manager, but his obit stated that he was a “superintendent of the King Ford Agency” … I googled King Ford in Huntington Park CA to see if I could find out more about it, and was so tickled to see the old photo from about 1937 … my grandmother always got one of the new models and supposedly “changed cars the way some people change clothes”! Have you ever heard any stories about Robert Ray Colaw during the time that he worked there? There is one story about him working in a pit crew for auto racing but it wasn’t anything I paid much attention to as child, and now there is no one left to ask! Are you aware of any history pertaining to racing? Thanks so much for any light you might be able to shed!
I recently bought a Ford Mustang 1965 which was sold from this dealer.
Now i plan to restore this Mustang to perfect condition .
