The fountain in Will Rogers Memorial Park across Sunset Blvd. from The Beverly Hills Hotel, circa 1910s
This fountain and park looks so different now, I doubt I would have recognized it if it hadn’t come with a caption. This is the fountain in the Will Rogers Memorial Park across from The Beverly Hills Hotel. That park … Continue reading
Aerial view of the Beverly Hills Hotel, circa 1920
I don’t know when this aerial view of the Beverly Hills Hotel was taken, but it must be pretty early. The wing facing Crescent Drive hasn’t been built yet, and those tennis courts are kinda sorta where the swimming pool … Continue reading
Beverly Hills Hotel, circa 1952
In a city known for its wholesale neglect of the past, it’s nice to see that some of its timeless architecture survives intact. This photo of the front of the Beverly Hills Hotel was probably taken around 1952. Both the … Continue reading
Beverly Hills Hotel and Sunset Park (Will Rogers Memorial Park) – 1915
This 1915 shot of the Beverly Hills Hotel was taken at the tip of the Will Rogers Memorial Park where Beverly Dr, Canon Dr, and Lomitas Ave converge on an intimidating 6-way, and-traffic-lights intersection. Back in 1915, the park was … Continue reading
Panoramic photograph of the Beverly Hills Hotel, 1914
Pretty much the only thing in this 1914 panoramic photo of the Beverly Hills Hotel that’s still the same is the building itself. (Ironic considering the unremitting glee with which Angelenos tear down their buildings.) Everything else we can see … Continue reading
The view from the Beverly Hills Hotel, circa mid-1910s
It’s hard to believe that the view from the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunset Blvd ever looked like this. I don’t have a date on this photo, but the hotel opened in 1912 and I’d say it was taken not … Continue reading
Beverly Hills Hotel entrance, circa 1940s
This is the entrance to the Beverly Hills Hotel as it looked in the 1940s. The foliage is now thicker and more lush, and the building is now a pale pink, but the entrance looks remarkably unchanged since then.
Looking north across an unpaved Sunset Blvd, the Beverly Hills Hotel under construction, 1912
The Beverly Hills Hotel is probably one of the most photographed hotels in L.A. but I’ve never seen one like this before. This was taken in 1912 during the hotel’s construction. The photographer was standing on Sunset Boulevard but he … Continue reading
Beverly Hills Hotel, 1924
This shot of the Beverly Hills Hotel was taken in 1924 when there was still a lot of space and elbow room in them thar hills. Beverly Hills, that is. Swimmin’ pools, movie stars . . . and a lot … Continue reading
Beverly Hills Hotel, 1910s
Without the Beverly Hills Hotel in the distance, you wouldn’t even be able to tell where this shot was taken. The house at right (at 806 N. Crescent, and is still there) was built the same year as the Beverly … Continue reading
