Noirish view of Sunset Blvd. Exit, Hollywood Freeway, circa 1960
What could be more noir-ish LA than this night-time view of the Sunset Blvd exit off the Hollywood Freeway at night, circa 1955?
The San Diego freeway (405 north) meets the Hollywood freeway (101), circa early 1960s
This shot probably won’t mean much to non-Angelenos but this one caused my jaw to drop. This is from the early 1960s and shows where the San Diego freeway (the 405 north) meets the Hollywood freeway (the 101). I can’t … Continue reading
Hollywood Freeway (the 101) at Whitley Heights, under construction, 1953
At the end of my street right now, the city is doing some work on the roads and, quite frankly, it’s a pain . . . until I saw this photo of Hollywood Freeway under construction at Whitley Heights in … Continue reading
Red Car streetcar in the middle of the Hollywood Freeway 101 at Cahuenga Pass 1948
I live near the Hollywood Freeway (the 101) and only recently discovered that it used to have a streetcar line running down the middle of it. This photo was taken in 1948, as a Red Car was heading into the … Continue reading

Northbound on the Hollywood Freeway at Melrose Ave, circa 1952.
This is the northbound Hollywood Freeway at Melrose Ave, circa 1952. I’ve seen this freeway more crowded at midnight. I hope those drivers knew how lucky they had it.
Peak hour on the Arroyo Seco Freeway in 1952
This is peak hour on the Arroyo Seco Freeway in 1952. I find it somehow perversely comforting to know that Angelinos in the 1950s also had to put up with bumper-to-bumper traffic too.
Hollywood Freeway (101) opening, 1958
Opening of the new freeway link from Vineland to Moorpark in Studio City on the brand new Hollywood Freeway, 7 February 1958. Oh, what I wouldn’t give for this stretch to look like that now.
San Diego (405) Freeway construction, 1957
Here in L.A. we’re so used to taking the freeway that we forget that there was a time when they didn’t exist…until we see a photo like this. Entire tracts of houses were sometimes razed to make way for new … Continue reading
