Camel riding in Venice, California, 1906
When Abbott Kinney conceived the “Venice of California” his vision came complete with canals, gondolas, amusement piers, hotels and Venetian-styled structures. I’m not sure how camel rides fit in, but those three people astride that camel seem to be enjoying … Continue reading
Well-dressed Angelenos promenading down Windward Ave, Venice, California, circa 1905
Given how hot it is throughout most of the year at Venice Beach, it’s hard for me to imagine how comfortable these well-dressed, Angelenos were as they promenaded along Windward Ave, fully dressed from hat to shoes, circa 1905. Not … Continue reading
Mule trains digging the canals of Venice, California, 1904
This photo doesn’t seem much until you realize that we’re looking at a photograph of the mule teams that Abbot Kinney employed to dig the canals of Venice in 1904. They didn’t last long as the work was proceeding too … Continue reading

This shot must have been taken fairly early on in the history of Venice Beach. The original canals are there in all their glory, just as developer Abbott Kinney intended them to be.
Venice Beach canal, circa 1920s
I love finding old photos of Venice Beach from back in the (too-brief) days when it really did resemble Venice, Italy. I don’t know when this was taken, but most of the canals were paved over by 1929.
Miniature railway venice loop at the end of Windward Avenue, Venice, Los Angeles, circa 1905
This miniature railway looped at the end of Windward Avenue in Venice. This shot was taken circa 1905, which puts it at around the time Venice was founded in 1905 as a seaside resort town.

Dance marathon, Venice Pier, 1934
I’ve often wondered where they held dance marathons in L.A. during the Depression. Apparently one of them was on the Venice Pier as shown in this 1934 photograph. At least the ocean breezes would have kept you cool and the … Continue reading
