Birdseye view of resorts near Los Angeles, California 1910 to 1913.
This caption on this photo was “Birdseye view of resorts near Los Angeles, California 1910 to 1913.” It reminds us how parts of greater LA were once distinct areas. I can see how Venice and Santa Monica could be considered … Continue reading
The original canals of Venice Beach, California, circa early 1900s
This shot must have been taken fairly early on in the history of Venice Beach. The original canals are there in all their glory, just as developer Abbott Kinney intended them to be.
Venice Beach canal, circa 1920s
I love finding old photos of Venice Beach from back in the (too-brief) days when it really did resemble Venice, Italy. I don’t know when this was taken, but most of the canals were paved over by 1929.

Oil wells along Venice Beach, California in 1931
Oil wells along Venice Beach in 1931. I’m thinking there probably wasn’t a whole lot of sunbathing or picnics at the beach going on while these things were pumping away.
Evening shot of Baron Long’s Ship Cafe on Venice pier, Los Angeles, California
A stunning view of Baron Long’s Ship Café that stood along the Venice pier through most of the first half of the 20th century. This photo was taken circa 1915. Baron Long owned or ran a number of Los Angeles … Continue reading
Camel riding in Venice, California, 1906
Apparently, in the early days of Venice (this photo was taken in 1906), one could while away the hours of a Sunday afternoon by going camel-riding. However, just as interesting, you can see in this photo how gorgeous the Abbot … Continue reading
