This sepia-tinged photo of the original Brown Derby on Wilshire Blvd, cross the street from the Ambassador Hotel is from 1957 and is now one of my new most favorite photos of one of my most favorite places of Hollywood’s yesteryear. I feel like I want to slink in at 2am, order a jumbo plate of chili fries, a chocolate thick shake, and a slice o’ pie.
I’m confused. I thought that the original location was at Mariposa & Wilshire, across Mariposa from the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg showroom. The Brown Derby moved from there in 1932 to make room for the Chapman Park Hotel which was to be used as women’s housing at the ’32 Olympics. They moved down Wilshire to a location that was later the original Perino’s (didn’t I read that here?) and then they moved back to S. Alexandria & Wilshire next door to the Gaylord Apartments, one block east of their old Mariposa location and across the street from the Chapman Park Hotel’s Zephyr Room restaurant.
I used to work at an insurance company on Shatto Place near Wilshire Boulevard. I have eaten at the Brown Derby many times and like so many others mourned its passing.

Hey George – thanks for your note. I (and many I know) are very jealous you got to eat there. Did you have a favorite dish(es)?
